The number of diagnosed cases of venereal or sexually transmitted infections (STIs) is increasing year by year in the UK. Almost every sexual act involves a risk of infection – more than half of all of us will acquring one at some time in our lives. There are many misconceptions about STIs. For example, one is that STIs can only be transmitted through vaginal sex. Not true! Oral sex or anal intercourse also carry risks. There are four main types of infections: viral, bacterial, fungal and parasitic. Bacterial infections and parasites are relatively easy to treat. Viral diseases, however, are much more serious and may sometimes leave sufferers with chronic, recurrent symptoms that last a lifetime. Examples of such symptoms are genital herpes and genital warts.

Anyone who is sexually active could be at risk of develop an STI. The risk is higher if you had many sexual partners, or if you had sex with someone who has/had numbers of partners, or you had unprotected intercorse.
